Letterbug's Ball Pages
Location
Minneapolis, MN
Date
Spring 2024
Project type
Storybook Spreads
This fun project was assigned by my Typography professor - Bill Moran. He has dedicated a lot of time in his career designing various species of bugs comprised of wooden type. Professor Moran then created a children's story, telling of the Letterbugs and their time at the ball. We were tasked with designing two spreads that included the text from his story and were provided with some existing letterbugs that or Professor had created.
I wanted to keep the spreads light and playful which is why I used elements of watercolor which always reminds me of childhood. I also searched for light and fun body copy text as well as a good accent text to pair together.
To tie the two spreads together, I used some repeating elements such as large circular shapes, repeating text, and twisting the text. It was important for me to create balanced spreads and not have one side of the page feel heavier than the other so I had a really fun time playing with the different elements that I could bring in to create that balance and unity.
